Special Olympics BC - Vernon has many valuable volunteers.

They

Volunteering with Special Olympics is an opportunity for you to improve the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and make a meaningful contribution to your community.

Getting involved with Special Olympics BC is also an opportunity for volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to

  • build friendships and networking connections
  • develop new skills for personal and professional development
  • gain opportunities for travel in Canada and abroad
  • share your love of sport
  • experience the satisfaction of helping others develop and succeed--in sport and in life!

Coaches play a critical role in the personal and athletic development of their athletes.

To coach, you must:

  • be 16 years of age or older
  • be available for the duration of the sport's program. (approx. 6 months for winter sports and 3 months for summer sports)
  • take the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP) within your first year
  • demonstrate good sportsmanship and co-operation
  • have a great sense of humour and adventure
  • model the values and goals of Special Olympics

You are welcome to attend a practice in the sport of your choice to get a feel for the organization, athletes and opportunities. The Head Coach will answer some of your questions and give you more information about how you can contribute to the sport.

Local Committee Volunteers

To be eligible for the local committee you must:

  • make a commitment of one year
  • have the skills required to fulfill the position
  • attend monthly meetings
  • demonstrate team work abilities
  • participate in occasional special events

  • Contact our Volunteers Coordinator who will speak with you about the many opportunities with Special Olympics and provide you with a registration package.

  • All volunteers must be registered with Special Olympics BC to ensure that you receive communication and access to training opportunities, and to fulfill our liability requirements.Your registration includes free membership in Special Olympics BC and Special Olympics Canada.

  • When your registration information and references have been checked, you may help the program of your choice.
